measurement #26

Orlando bought a plot of land measuring 1 square mile, on which he plans to grow blueberries. He hires 346 people to plant seedlings. It takes about 20 seconds to plant each seedling, and each seedling requires 1.5 square feet of area.

a. How many square feet of land can teh 346 workers plant each minute? Explain your strategy using words/numbers.
b. How much time will it take to plant the entire plot of land? Explain your reasoning and strategy using words and/or numbers.
c. Orlando decides to plant a different type of blueberry that requires only 1.2 square feet of land per seedling. How much time will it take the workers to plant these seedlings? Explain your strategy using words/numbers.

a. 18,585,600 square feet of land. If you take 5,280 (# of feet in a mile) times by 5,280 (because it is a SQUARE mile meaning that you times the number by itself) you get the big number of 27,878,400 for the space that is avalible. If you divide that by 1.5 for the amount of space that each seedling needs you get 18,585,600.

b. 464,640 minutes because you take the big number 27,878,400 and divide that by 60 because there is 60 minutes in an hour.

c. It would take the same amount of 464,640 minutes because the time doesn't change. The only thing that does change is the amount of space that each seedling needs. It doesn't say anything for the difference in the amount of time that is needed to plant one seed. The time stays the same otherwise it would have said something different.

a.1036 of 3520 square feet 5280/1.5 = 3520, 60/20= 3 so 346 people x 3 for how many in a minute.
b. 5 minutes 20 seconds, 346 x 3 for 1 minute 5 times=5190 + 346= 20 seconds so less than 5 minutes 20 seconds.
c. about 4 min 33 seconds because 1.2 x 346 = 13/3 4.33

3 because 20 seconds go into a minutes 3 times

B. 1 minute equals 1557 sq ft

3 x 1557 = 4671 left over=609
609 / 1557 =0.39 + 3.00 =
3 minutes and 23 seconds

C. 4400seeds fit in land divided by the amount of seeds planted per minute = 4 minutes and 13 seconds

a)1557 ft sq. 5280x5280= area 27878400 ft sq. if they can plant one every 20 seconds they can plant 3 in a minute. Take 3 times the # of workers to get 1038 seeds per minute. Take 1038 times the number of room the seed requires and you get 1557ft sq.

b)17905 minutes or 12 days. take the area of the plot divided by the number of square feet they can plant per minute and get 17905 minutes. Divide that by 60 min and then again by 24 hours in a day and you get around 12 days.

c)22382 min. or around 15 days. do the same process until you have to multiple the # of seeds they can plant per minute times the room the seeds take up. Instead of 1.5 use 1.2. You will get 1245.6 sq. ft per min. Finish by doing what you did in question b to get around 15 days.

a. The workers will be able to plant 1,557 square feet of land each minute. You take 60 divided by 20 because there are 60 seconds in a minute and they can plant one seed in 20 seconds that will = 3. So 1 worker can plant 3 seeds in 1 min. Then take 346 x 3 because to get the number of total seeds which = 1038 seeds. Then take 1038 x 1.5 (number of square feet) to = 1557 square feet per min.
b. It took the workers 15,488 min. per square mile, to plant the entire field. First take 5280 x 5280, because there are 5280 square feet in a mile which then = 27,878,400 square feet. Then divide that by 1.5 to figure out the number of times 1.5 went into 27,878,400 which = 18,585,600. Then divide it again by 20 = 929,280 seconds per square mile. Then divided it again by 60 to convert it into minutes = 15,488 min. per square mile.
c. It took the workers 19,360 min. per square mile to finish the new blueberry patch. Multiply 5280 x 5280 = 27,878,400 and then divide 27,878,400 by 1.2 which equaled 23,232,000. Then divide that by 20 = 1,161,000. After that I divided that by 60 to get 19,360 min.

A. 1557 square feet. What I did is I took 346 times 3 becuase 20 seconds goes into a minute 3 times. then I got my awnser and took that times 1.5 becuase each seedling requires 1.5 square feet.

B. 300 seconds.I took 346 times 5280 becuase 1 mile equals 5280ft then I got 15. a buch of numbers and took 15 times 20 and got my awnser.

c. 1245 square feet. What I did is I took 346 times 3 becuase 20 seconds goes into a minute 3 times. then I got my awnser and took that times 1.2 becuase each blueberry seedling requires 1.2 square feet.

A. A minute is 60 seconds so 20 x 3= 60 seconds. It takes 60 seconds to plant 3 seedlings. 3 seedlings per worker so 3 x 346 = 1,038 are planted in one minute. To get how many square feet of land you need to divide. 1,038/1.5 = 692 square feet of land.

B. You need to convert all the numbers to feet. 1 mile = 5,280 feet. 692/5,280 = 7.6 minutes. If you round it will take about 8 minutes.

C. 1,038/1.2 = 865 square feet of land. 865/5,280 = 6.1. If you round, it will take about 6 minutes.

A=1,557 I took 1 mile and change it to feet witch is 5,280ft.Then I took 5,280 times it self and got 27,878,400sqft.Then I got that one prson can plant 3 seeds a min.Then I took 346 times 3 and got 1,038.Then i took 27,878,400 divied by 1.5 to get 19,585,600.Then I took18585600 divied by 20 to get 929280 Then I divied 929,280 by 346 and got 2685.780347.

B= I took 2685.780347 and took all the numbers buhind the desmo off and got 2685

C= I took 27,878,400 divied by 1.2 to get 23,232,000. Then I took 23,232,000 to get 161,600. Then I took 161,600 divied by 346 to get 467.05,207.Then I took all the number after the decimal off.

I did 346 times .60 equals 207.6 then divided by .20 a got 1038 seedlings per minute.

B. I did .20 times 5280 and got 1056 which is 17.6 minutes to plant the field.

C. It will be the same as B because everything is the same except the square feet which doesn’t change anything.

It takes 1.5 square feet per seed times 3 seeds = 4.5 square feet per person.
346 people plant 4.5 square feet per minute = 1557 square feet.
b. Total square footage is 5280 ft times 5280 ft = 27878400. Divide total square footage by number of square feet all workers can plant per minute 1557 = 17905 minutes, approximately.
c. From problem a, assuming each worker can still plant 3 seeds in one minute. Takes 1.2 square feet per seed, so 1.2 times 3 seeds = 3.6 square feet per person. Take 346 people times 3.6 square feet per minute = 1249.2 square feet per minute. Total square footage is 27878400 square feet; divide that by the number of square feet they can plant per minute 1248.2 = 22334 minutes approximately.

A) Per minute, 4.5 sq ft of land can be planted by the 346 workers. I took 1.5 times 3 and ended up with this answer.

B) It will take 3.4 minutes to plant the entire plot of land. One mile equals 5,280 ft, so I took 5,280 divided by 4.5 and then times that answer by 346 (number of workers).

C) The workers will take 4.2 minutes to plant the seedlings. 1.2 times three equals 3.6 sq ft per minute. In C, I did the same thing that I did in B, but changed 1.5 to 1.2; 5,280 divided by 1.2 and then multiplied that answer by 346 again.

a. to find this out you have to take 346 x 3 because there are 346 people a they can plant a plant in 20sec there are 60 sec in a min some you times in by 3 because 60/ 20 = 3 You get an answer of 1038 then you have to take that x 1.5 because that is how much the plant takes and you get a answer of 1557sq ft per min.

b. to find this out you have to find the area of the land so you take 5280 x 5280 to get the are of the land which is 27878400 then you have to take that times 1557 because that is how much they can plant a min. to get your answer of 430668800 min or 72344480 hrs.

c. this is basically the same as the first on to get your answer you have to take 364 x 3 to get 1038 then you have to take that times 1.2 to get 1245.6 sq. ft per min then you have to take that times 27878400 to get you answer of 34725335040 min.

a. 519 square feet of land because 1.5x346=519 sqare feet of land.

b. 4259 days because you multiply 5280x5280= that number divided by 3 because that is how many seedlings they plant in one minute, then divide by 60 which is meaning a hour then divide by 24 which means a day.

c. 5323 days because you multiply 1.2 and 27598400= that number divided by 3=how many seedlings they plant in a minute divided by 60=a hour then divide that number by 24=days which all of that= 5323 days.

A]1759.5 feet. I took 5280 divided by 1.5 cause that’s how many feet in a mile and that’s how many feet each plant needs and got 3520 so that’s how many plants he can have planted on his land. Then I took 3520 times 20 cause that’s how many seconds it takes to plant one and got 70400 seconds. Then I took 70400 divided that by 60 cause there are 60 seconds in a minute and got 1173ft and that’s how many ft they can plant in one minute.

B]4 ½ minutes because if it takes them one minute to plant 1173 ft then you just add one minute each time you add 1173 to 1173 and you get over or under the amount of feet in a mile and so it equals to 4 ½ minutes.

C]It will take them 1760000 seconds to plant 4400 seeds on his land because 5280 divided by 1.2 equals 4400 then you take that times 20 sec. and get 1760000.

Then you take the answer you got, which was 4.5 and you multiply that by 346 which is the number of workers there are planting seeds, and you get 1557 square feet of land the workers plant each minute.

b. 298 hours to plant the entire plot of land. First you take 27,878,400 which is the number I got when I took5,280 times itself. I did this because I had to find square feet. Then I took 27,878,400 divided by 1.5 which is the total square area, and you get 18,585,600. Then you take that number divided by 346 which is the number fo workers and you get 53,716. Then you take that number and divide it by 60, because thats how many seconds in a minute, and you get 895. Then you take 895 divided by 3 because thats how many times you have to multiply 20 to get 60, that answer is 298 hours to plant the entire plot of land.

c. 373 hours it would take the workers to plant the plot of land that is 1.2 square feet. First you take 27,878,400 and divided by 1.2 and get 23,232,000. Then you take that number divide that by 346 and get 67,145. Then you take that divided by 60 and that equals 1,119. Then you take that divided by 3 and you get your answer of 373.

A) 80573.4104 because if you times 5280 x5280 you would get 27878400. Then divide by 346 because of the people to plant seedlings the you would get 80573.4104.

B) You times 346x1.5 divided by 20 and that would equal 25.95 repeated.

C) 1.2 times 12 equals 14.4 then times 346 equals 4982.4 then divide by 20 equals 249.12 would be your answer.

Here are the "real" answers. Your strategies to get the answers could be different.

a. 1557 square feet

b. A square mile contains 5280 ft x 5280 ft, or 27,878,400 square feet. The workers will take 27878400 divided by 1557, or 17905 minutes, which equals about 298 hours to plant the entire plot.

c. about 373 hours
