Data Analysis #2

A newspaper surveyed some stores on the prices of all running shoes. The prices to the nearest dollar are displayed in the plot below.

2 ] 4 9
3 ] 2 5 5
4 ] 4
5 ] 2 2 4 8 9
6 ] 0 5 5 8 9
7 ] 0 4 4 9 9 9
8 ] 2 5 6
9 ] 4
10 ] 5
11 ] 0 9 9 ] 4 = $94

A reporter writes, "Half of the running shoes in the stores surveyed are priced greater than or equal to _______." What number should the reporter have used in the blank? Thoroughly explain your answer!!!!! (up to 4 points for answer; up to 6 points for explanation)

"Half of the running shoes in the stores surveyed are priced greater than or equal to $68."
I got $68 because I found the median of all the numbers. From $24 to $119 I found the median.
I took the key word in my mind from what the reporter wrote "half" and so I found the median because there would be the same amount on both sides and also because there is an odd number of prices.
But it took me a little bit to understand the question asked. I didn't know if there was supposed to be a space between 11]09 and then the key would be 9]4 = $94. That is how I read it.

$68.00, the median is 68 so then half will be over 68 dollars.

68 because the median is 68 and that's half of all the prices. So its mostly $68 or over.

67, because 67 is in the middle of all of the problems that are showed up on the post. there is a even number and it ends up with 65 and 68 and the middle is 67

65 I found the median of the numbers which was 65 nad since they were already in order, that means anything that was above it would be more expensive.

Answer=68

Because you have to find the median of all the prices and that will be half of the running shoes.

68. The median of the data is 68.

68 is the answer b/c if you add them all together and divide it by how many numbers you added another words find the menian witch is haff

The answer is 67 because you find the 2 middle #'s and they are 68 and 65. You add those together and then divide that # by 2 and you get 67.

The answer is 68, because it is in the middle of all the other numbers!

$68, because there are 29 prices and if you count 15 you will get equal or greater nuber of prices

Anonymous said...

The answer is 68, because 68 is in the middle of the numbers and so half of the numbers are greater than 68 and half of the numbers are smaller than 68

Anonymous said...

65, because first you count how many shoes there is which is 29 and then you divide that by 2 which is 14.5 which goes to just 14. Then you count up to 14 shoes and look at the number which is 65

50 dollars because up from 50 dollars it is expensive than less than 50.

the reporter should have out in about $66.80 dollars, because if you add all the numbers (24..) together you'll come up with $1937 then dived that by how many numbers there are, (29)to get an answer of $66.73910... then round that to $66.80.

69.86 or higher is the price for most of the shoes. i got this by adding all the prices together, counting up the prices as a number of 30, and divided the numbers.
all numbers added to gether equals 2096 divided by thirty equals 69.86

68 Because I found the Median of the stem and leaf plot. I found the Median because it is the middle of this set of numbers. The mean probably woouldn't work because it would have a nubmer that wounld not be it would not be in a number in the gragh.

The answer is 4 becasue most of the numbers are equal to or greater than four! So thats the answer you get!!

14.50. I counted all of the prices; I got 29. I divided 29 and 2 and got 14.50. I did this because it says half of the running shoes.

Anonymous said...

69 because if you find half of the data the number is 69.

Anonymous said...

The answer is 68$ because if you keep crossing out numbers on each side you get to the middle

I beleive that the reproter should have used $68 because half of the running shoes are placed greater then $68. It also shows that even if you don't know how many soes there are u would think that half or over half are placed above $68.

79 because there are three priced at 79 and that is the most with that price.

Anonymous said...

The answer would be $65, because if you find the median of the data, it comes down to 65 and 60. 65 is the higher price, so it would be the price stated.

the answer should de 24 because it says tyhat all other answers are greater or equal to this and all of the other numbers on the chart are greater than this or equal to this #.
