9/7 Problem of Week

Friday was pajama day at Mitchell Middle School. Mrs. K's class has 20 students, and 14 of them are wearing pajamas. Mr. Moller's class has 28 students. On that day, Mr. Moller's class had 21 students wearing pajamas.

A) Which class had a higher percentage of students wearing pajamas? Show your work/EXPLAIN.

B) Mrs. K's class now has 25 students. At least how many students would have to be wearing pajamas for her class to win the spirit award given to the class with the most people participating? Explain.

A) Mr. Moller has 75% and Mrs. K. has 70%. So Mr. Moller has a bigger % of students wearing pjs because 14/20=.7=70% and 21/28=.75=75%.

B) 19 kids have to be participating in Mrs. K.s class to win the spirit award because if you go 19/25=.76=76%.

mollers has 3/4 which= 75/100
Mrs. k class has 7/10 which = 70/100 so mollers has more.
mrs.k class has to have at least 19/25

Mr Mollers class has a higher percentage. 14/20 equals 70% and 21/28 equalks 75%.

Mrs Ks class would need at least 19 kids to win the spirt award because 19/25 equals 76% and Mr Mollers class only has 75%.

You would change 14/20 into 70/100 which would be 70 percent.
Then you would change 21/28 into 75/100 by multipling 21 and 28 times 3.57142857. which i got by taking 100 divided by 28. The answer is 75/100 which is 75 percent.
so the answer for letter A is Mr. Moller's class.
For letter B i got 19 because 19 times 4 is 76 and 25 times 4 is 100.So 76 percent is larger then 75 percent and the answer is 19 for letter B.

Mr Moller has 75% and Mrs K. has 70%. So Mr M. would have won. B. She would need 20 kids to win.

Mr.Moller because -20%*5=100% so u do 14*5=70 this is Mrs.K's- Mr.M's its 100/28=3.6 so u do 21*3.6=76.

for Q (b) 25*4= 100% so u need atleast over 76% so 20*5=80% so 20 people wearing pajamas would work

A.for mrs.ks class you take 14/20=.7and mr.mollers class won becose 21/28=.75 so thats more

B.19 kids would have to where pjs to win becouse 19/25=.76

A)For Mrs.K's Class i took 14 over 20 = 70 over 100. I took 20*5=100 and 14*5=70 that equals 70%. For mr.M's class i took 100/28=3.6 then i took 21*3.6=76 and 76 aver 100= 76%. so Mr.M's class had a higher percentage.

B)I used trial and error. So i took 110/25= 4. Then my answer was 20 then i took 20*4=80 and 80 over 100= 80%. so 20 kids must wear pajamas in order to have the highest percentage

A) Mr.Moller had a higher percentage beacuse 21 divided by 28 is 75%.

B)Mrs.K would need atleast 19 students to win because 19 divided by 25 is 76%.

A)Mr Moller has more students wearing pajamas. Because if you find a common denominator which is 140 Mr.Moller has 105 over 140 and mrs. Konechne has 98 over 140 which means Mr. Moller has more students wearing pajamas.

B) 19 students would have to be wearing pajamas for Mrs. Konechne's class to win. because if you find a common denominator of 25 and 28 you get 700 and 19 over 25 is 532 over 700 and 21 over 28 is 525 over 700 which is less than Mrs Konechnes class so Mrs konecne wins.

A) i divided 14/20 and got mrs.k= .7= 70% then i divided 21/28 mr.m .75= 75%

B) 19/25= .76= 76% to get 19 i just used the guess and check method. i started with 20 but that was to big. so then i went down to 19 and then got my answer.

mylesszabo:) said...

A)mr moller becasue they had 75% and mrs.konechnes class had 70%.B)20 because that would be 80% mr moller had 75%

mrs.k's class has 70% that had pj's and mr.M's class had 75% that had pj's so mr m had more

at least 19 because u take 19 * 4 which gives u the percent of which people have pj's

Koln Thie said...

Mrs Koneches class would have to have at least 19 kids wearing pajamas because 19 kids is 76 percent and mr mollers class only had 75 percent.

14\20ths is 70 percent and 21\28 is 75 percent.

(a) I used fractions to solve the problem. Konechne is 14/20 or 7/10 Moller is 21/28 or 3/4 when brought down. So then I converted them into percentages. konechne is 70% and Molled is 75%, so Moller has the higher perentage.
(b) I used fractions again. So Moller stays the same, but Konechne now has 25 kids. So I first tryed 20 out of the 25. Thats 80% in the end. So you would need somewhere around 20 kids to beat Moller for the prize!

A)Mr. Moller had a higher percentage wearing pajamas.21/28 is equivalent to 3/4. Mrs. K's class has 20 students, 14 of which were wearing pajamas.14/20 isn't even 3/4.

B)At least 18 students need to be wearing pajamas to equal 75% or 3/4 of the students. 18/25 is slighly more then 75%.

Landon Dierks said...

Part A- Mr. Moller's class would win because 21/28= 3/4= 75% but 14/20= 7/10= 70%. Part B- To win the SPIRIT AWARD Mrs. K's class would have to have 19 or more students because 19/25= 76% and thats 1% more than Mr. Moller's class.

Alex H said...

Mrs Konechne's has the greater percentage because her class has more people wearing pj's.

Mr Moler's class has the greater percentage because he has more people in his class wearing pj's.

you take 14 divided by 20 times 100=70% 21 divided by 28 times 100 =75% mr.mollers class had the higher present 75%. you take 100 divided by 25 = 4 then take 75 divided by 4 = 18.75 rounded= 19

A) Mr. Mollers, because i put 14 and 20 ito a fraction and simplified to 7/10 which is 70%, then i put 21 and 28 into a fraction and simplified it to 3/4 which is 75%.

B) 19, i put 19 and 25 into a fraction and put it into a percent which is 76%.

Lily Hoffman said...

A) Mr.Moller's class because 75% of his class were wearing pjs while Mrs.K's class has 70% of the class wore pjs.

B)19 because 19/25 is 76% which is higher than Mr.Moller's class of 75%.

Haley Nettinga said...

A)You convert the numbers into fractions, simplify the fractions, then turn them to percents:
14/20= 7/10= 70%
21/28= 3/4= 75%
Mr. Moller's class has the bigger percentage.
B)Take 75% of 25 to find a number more than 75%:
75%= .75
.75*25=18.75
In this case you have to round up because you can't have 75% of a person!!
answer- you would need at least 19 students to wear pajamas to win the spirit award.
Thanks for listening!!-Haley

A: Mr. Moller's class has a higher percentage of students wearing pajamas. To find that first, I calculated the percent of students in each class wearing pajamas. To make them into a percent I took 14 divided by 20=70%. Then I took 21 divided by 28=75%. Finally, 75% is larger than 70%. So, obviously Mr. Moller's class won.

B: Mrs. K's class would have to have 22 students participate to win. Because that would be one more student than Mr. Moller's 21. If the spirit award is given to the class with the highest percentage of particiption Mrs. K would only need 19 students to win. Because 19 students is greater than the 75% participation in Mr. Moller's class. 19 divided by 25=76%

a mr moller becase if you find a common denominator and then turn them into equivient factions mr. moller has more

b 19 because if you find the common denominator of each problem and turn mr mollers into a fraction the fraction is 525/500 you need to get our number to be larger

14 over 20 is change to 70% and 21 over 28 is cahnged to 75% the answer for a is mr.mollers class and b is is 19 beacause 19 over 25 is 76%

Gracie Kattner(: said...

A)The answer is Mr.Mollers class because he has a percentage of 75% and Mrs.Ks class only has a percentage of 70%.

B)The answer is 19 kids because 19/25 is 76%.

Unknown said...

A) Mr. M has more because 21 students wore pajamas out of 28 so if you divide that you get 75%. Mrs. K has 14 out of 20 so if you times 14 by 5 and the same to 20 you get 70%.
B) Mrs. K would need at least 19 out of 25 studentsto win. 19 times 4 equals 76% and Mr. M only has 75%. So Mrs. K has one more % then Mr. M and won the spirit award.

Gillian said...

A) mrs.K has 20 kids, 14 wearing pjs. 14/20=.7=70 percent. Mr.M has 28 kids, 21 wearing pjs. 21/28=.75=75 percent, which is the larger #.
B)it was hit and miss. mrs.K's class now has 25 students. 25/19=
.76=76 percent which is larger than 75 percent.

Tevyn Waddell said...

A- 14/20 (14 kids wearing PJs and 20 in all kids)is .7 which equals 70% of Ms. K's class. 21/28 (21 kids wearing PJs and 28 kids in all) is .75 which equals 75% of Mr. Moller's class

B- 25 X .76 (25 kids in all and .76 is how many are wearing PJs) is 19 students are wearing their PJs. WE WIN!!!!!!

Landon Pooley said...

A) Mrs. K's class had 14 of 20 students wearing pajamas. To figure the percentage of students wearing pajamas you have to divide 20 by 14. 14/20 = .70 or 70%.

Mr Moller's class had 21 out of 28 students wearing pajamas. 12/28 = .75 or 75%.

75% is greater than 70% therefore Mr. Moller's class had the higher percentage of students wearing pajamas.

B) If Mrs. K's class now has 25 students, she would need to have at least 19 of them wearing pajamas in order to have a higher percentage than Mr. Moller because
25 * 75% = 18.75. Since you can't have .75 of a student and we want to have greater than 75%, we need to round up to 19 students.

Shelby Riggs said...

A) Mr. Moller's class has a percentage of 75 percent and Mrs. Konechne's class has seventy percent, so Mr. Moller's class has 5 percent more, and therefore has a higher percentage. I found this by taking Mr. Moller's total class, twenty eight people, and the total number of people participating, 21, and I porportioned those numbers so it was 21 over 28 is equal to variable over 100. My answer turned out to be 75 percent. I did the same to Mrs. Konechne and came up with 70 percent. Mr. Moller has a higher percentage.
B) Mrs. K would need to have 22 students participating because the spirit award goes to the class with the highest total students, not the highest total percentage.

Daxx Wiebelhaus said...

The second question is 19. Since Mr Moller's class has 75% of them in PJs, you need over 75% witch is 18 for Mrs. K's expanded class. you need another person wering PJs to win.

Challie :) said...

A) 14/20= 7/10= 70% Konechne
21/28= 3/4= 75% Moller

B) n/25= 76% n=19

Mrs.K needs 19 people to wear their pj's to win the spirit award.

Daxx Wiebelhaus said...

Mr. Moller has a higher percent of kids wearing PJs. His class has exactly 75% of his kids wearing pajamas. Mrs. K's class has only 70% wearing them.

Emily Parks said...

A)Mr. Moller has a higher percent because 21 out of 28 is 75% and 14 out of 20 is 70%, so he has more.
B)She would need 19 out of 25 student because if 70% of Mr. Mollers class is wearing pagamas, if 19 out of 25 wore pajamas, it would be 76% of the class.

Unknown said...

A)Mr.M has more because 21 students wore pajamas out of 28 so if you divide that you get 75%. Mrs.K has 14 students out of 20 so if you times 14 by 5 and then same to 20 you get 70% out of 100%. So Mr.M has a bigger percentage then Mrs.K.
B) Mrs.K would need at least 19 out of 25 students to win. 19 times 4 equals 76% and Mr.M has only 75% . So Mrs.K only needs 19 people to win the spirit award.

ok put 14 over 20 and into a percent to get 70% for mrs.k and 21 over 28 which in a percent is 75% which is the winner but if she has 19 over 25 it is a percent of 75% so then she would win

Kelsie Mastel said...

Mrs.K's class had 14/20 students wearing pajamas. I found the percent by dividing 14 by 20 and i got 70%. Mr.Mollers class had 21 out of 28 students wearing pajamas. I divided 21 by 28 and i got 75%. Mr.Mollers class had the higher percentage.

At least 19 out of 25 students would have to wear pajamas to win because 19/25 students equals 76% which is one percent higher that Mr.mollers class would have.

calvin gilb said...

The class that has the higher percentage is Mr.Moller because 21/28 is equal to 75% and 14/20 is equal to 70%.

At least 19/25 because it is equal to 76%.
